Eli Melby from ARENA will present her postdoctoral WAGE project: Egalitarian but not Equal: Sectoral Wage Formation and Gendered Wage Differentials. Some of Europe's strongest collective bargaining systems coexist with persistent gender pay gaps. Coordinated pattern bargaining raises wages across the economy. But because every sector is tied to a wage norm set by the male-dominated, export-exposed manufacturing sector, the gaps between sectors stay in place, and there is little room to correct the historical undervaluation of feminised work. In this research project, we take as a starting hypothesis that coordinated wage setting is egalitarian but not equal, what Wagner and Teigen (2022) call egalitarian inequality. We seek to unpack the underlying mechanisms as to why the gender pay gap persists in a situation where some feminized sectors have a higher union density, and industry is losing the historical relevance it had when the pattern bargaining model was established. In this seminar, I will present preliminary results from fieldwork among the social partners in the Norwegian pattern bargaining model.
